The five desires (money, sex, fame, food, sleep) are the root causes of hellish rebirth. Cultivation of the Proper Dharma — prostrations, propagation, offerings to the Sangha, offerings to the Buddha/Bodhisattvas, vowing for Pure Land rebirth, and abiding in virtue (5 precepts/ten good deeds) — leads to Pure Land rebirth and freedom from all suffering.
